New Caledonia opened their World Cup qualifying campaign with a convincing 3-1 win over Papua New Guinea. Despite difficult conditions due to heavy rain, New Caledonia dominated the first half, scoring twice before the break. Papua New Guinea improved in the second half and managed to pull a goal back, but New Caledonia quickly responded to secure the victory with a third goal.
